About

This blog is about my thoughts on being human. I don’t have any answers, but I do have a lot of questions.

Shasta, me, and Nevada in Wyoming

I decided to start this blog because other subjects kept showing up in my running blog.  Even though I believe everything is interconnected and bound together, I’m giving all my more esoteric, philosophical, and quirky subjects their own space.  My running friends are probably happier for it, too.

About me:  I dropped out of college to travel around Mexico on the back of a motorcycle–and it pretty much changed my life.  I lived in Switzerland for seven years, then came home to Texas and finished college.  I was an elementary school teacher for 20 years and two years ago decided it was time to set out in a new direction.

I love the outdoors, and am an avid runner.  I love to hike and camp, especially in the west, but I love the desert southwest most of all.  There’s nothing better than  gazing at a star filled sky in the desert. It keeps me humble and reminds me that I really don’t know anything at all.

Which is just as it should be.

I love to knit, and I read a lot, even though I never seem to have enough time. Most of all I love to write.  I always have.

All my life I’ve wanted to be somewhere else. Writing keeps me grounded.

In June 2013 I was diagnosed with stage 1C ovarian cancer. Less than 15% of women with ovarian cancer are diagnosed as early as I was. 61% are diagnosed after the cancer has already spread to other organs. There is currently no screening for ovarian cancer.

I wrote a lot of posts about my journey to survive cancer as I navigated my way through that incredible time in my life. I hope it doesn’t scare you off. There are things about living with cancer that need to see the light of day.

I hope that by sharing my journey through this experience of cancer and chemotherapy that I can help other women who may be sharing the same story. I hope to help other women become advocates for their own health and to become more aware of this pernicious, silent killer. My number one piece of advice to women: listen to your body. My number two piece of advice: for ANY type of unusual symptom below the waist, always see your gynecologist first.

I have a small business, Toasty Strings, and design and make knitted scarves, wraps, and blankets. Please feel free to check out my shop.

Also, please feel free to leave a comment, and be sure to leave a link to your own blog, if you have one, so I can visit your site.

I also have a running blog, Run Nature. Thanks for visiting!

I love your perspective on life and enjoyed reading your posts. I’m brand new to blogging and am trying to navigate the murky waters of writing about anything and everything human. You are doing it beautifully! I debated focusing on running, too, but anticipated the invasion of endless addional thoughts…

Thanks so much, and congratulations on starting a new blog. I will definitely check it out. I love to read anything running related, and look forward to seeing what you’ve done. Thanks for visiting!

Your site is wonderful! I’m a newbie blogger as well. A thoughtful comment you left on another blog led me here 🙂 It’s so exciting to find a place where you can connect with others who share similar interests. I’m studying teaching right now and trying to give more attention to my photography. Treadmills and gyms just can’t beat a good walk outdoors (an old injury won’t allow me to run for long…but good for you!) Writing is wonderful; it’s helpful in processing it all from day-to-day. Change can be fun. Hoping you have lots of fun on your new journey!

Thanks so much for visiting! I’ve been pretty lazy so far in the new year about posting new entries, but I hope to kick it back in high gear this week. I’ll check out your new site as well. I hope you write about your journey to becoming a teacher, in addition to your other interests. I love to walk. I love to run, too, but nothing beats a good, long walk. Looking forward to reading your new blog.

Your comment on another blog led me here…and I’m so impressed by your candor in your About section. I’ll be following you from now on! We share interests – the southwest, Yellowstone – so you might be interested in my blog at westerner54.wordpress.com.

Thank you so much for your kind words! I’ll be checking your blog out as well. I’m headed to Oregon in April, then Jackson Hole in July–and I can’t wait! I seriously need some time out west.

    • Mind Margins

Thanks, and I love your quirky blog! Can’t wait to read all about that trip across the US. I LOVE long road trips. I’m driving to Jackson Hole, WY in July and am already getting excited.

Angela, was glad for your comment about feminism on a recent blog, and think we have a lot in common. I, too, am reinventing myself after a lifetime working as a scientist and teacher. Writing has always been essential to to me for keeping perspective – and sanity – in a complex and often irrational human culture.

Hi, Monica, I’ve seen comments you make on another blog and have been meaning to check yours out for the longest time. Thanks for checking me out! Your family stories remind me of when my kids were younger. Good times!

Goodness, it was really refreshing to read that! I would love to do some of the things you said you have – especially running! There is something that gives you freedom and really lifts your spirits when you just set out running. I really enjoyed reading this, and your other posts! You said to leave a link – so here’s mine: http://www.beansprowtcrocodile.wordpress.com
    You are an inspiration!

You’re such a free spirit! Good for you. I would like to travel more than I do so when I meet people who can change directions on a moment’s notice I am stoked. Oh, and thanks for the like.

Did you already post something about your Mexico motorcycle trip? I’ll bet that’s an interesting read!

What an interesting blog … plus great pics with the dogs. (No, I didn’t aim for the rhyme) … Thanks for stopping by my little corner of the world. Meanwhile, I’ll browse around. 🙂

      • aFrankAngle

Thanks. My topics are wide ranging .. actually something for all … plus I’m good at reciprocating. 🙂 But, the next several weeks are going to limit my time.

      • Mind Margins/Run Nature

My posts are all over the place as well, so it’s nice to find a kindred spirit who doesn’t limit themselves to one type of topic. I’m pretty bad about sticking to any type of a writing schedule, so I can certainly understand being busy!

I really like your thoughts about looking up at a star-filled sky and realizing that we just don’t know anything at all…and that it’s a good thing. Mystery IS good and it’s good for all of us to realize that. Well said! Nice to find your blog (even though I’m not a runner, lol) 🙂

    • Mind Margins/Run Nature

Thank you so much, and no running required! I actually have a separate running blog to try and keep all that craziness in its own little compartment, but sometimes it bleeds over into this blog. Appreciate your nice comment.

    Hi,

Thanks so much for the recent like of my blog post on “Kayaking into the wind.” I am reading your story here and can’t wait for the next installment.

I am now following your blog so I don’t miss anything.

    Happy blogging!

    Nancy

So I am now wondering to myself, why have I not been to your ‘About’ page? And after a night of ‘serious’ words and thoughts from me, I am….

…. running amok on your blog. On your About page…and going …

WOOOO WOOOO WOOO….and acting like a total dork *smirkles* …and oooohhhh believe me, I do ‘dork’ soooo well *S*.

Have I given you googly eyes yet?

    OooOoOOOooOOOooOoOoOOo

Oh, I also visited your very first blog on here. *smiles*. A friend once told me, ‘you come blogging for a particular reason, but you stay for another.” She meant in the former, to show ourselves to the world. And as to the latter…she meant friends *smiles*

And I think … in my staying, I have found another *smiles*….even if by posting this you now thing to yourself, “crap, where is the ‘send to trash’ button?”

    *grins*

    Thank you….for everything.

It was one from last July or August, and was mostly a photo montage of the Teton Mountains when we were there for my daughter’s wedding. I barely wrote anything, so my husband gets all the credit for his amazing photos. I’ve never had a fully written post get Freshly Pressed. 😦

      • Irish Katie

ok…I looked at it … the photos were amazing…so your husband gets *yahs* from me. And the wedding at the Grand Tetons…omg how stunning that must have been. (The back drop as well as the daughter’s happy day *smiles*).

      • Mind Margins/Run Nature

It was a little stressful because it was on national forest land and we couldn’t reserve the space (so we camped there and had to chase everyone else off), we did everything ourselves, and it rained almost every day we were there. The wind picked up just as the ceremony began but the rain stayed away. It was spectacular!

You are quite the rockstar! I cannot wait to see your posts to come, keep on keepin’ strong, lady!

  19. Tim May

Wishing you the best this holiday season and for those yet to come. I hope family, friends, and good times keep pace as you take off on your next run. Good to hear from you Angela, even if it’s a “like” button press!

    • Mind Margins

I haven’t always hit the Like button or left a comment, but I’ve been reading your blog and admiring your lovely photos this entire time. I hope to be writing again soon. I’ve been busy setting up an Etsy shop and it was just the break I needed. Life is good! Happy holidays to you and your family, Tim!
