Beautiful Tetons

During our week of camping in the Tetons, followed by my daughter’s wedding, we were audience to the continually changing beauty of the Tetons. I wanted to post a few photos of the Tetons, to show how different they looked at various times of day, but rather than just “a few,” decided to post all of the best photos.

MORNING:

After unzipping the tent each morning, the Tetons were always my first sight. It became a game each morning to discover how the mountains would look that first hour of the day.

Foggy Tetons

Our first morning’s view, before the fog had lifted in the valley

Teton view from the campsite

This was the view from our campsite.

Teton Dogs

Tetons as backdrop to my dogs, Shasta and Nevada

Tetons with Popcorn Clouds

The clouds were different every day we were there

NOON:

The afternoons were very warm, and the sunshine at altitude was intense. Everyone got sunburned the first day within the first hour. Each afternoon seemed to bring dramatic weather, with winds and dark clouds, though many times the rain never hit the ground.

Tetons after the rain

Our first view, after a huge downpour

Teton Rainshower

It wasn’t unusual to see rain and sunshine at the same time

Tetons and low clouds

After a hard rain storm

Tetons with rays of sunshine

Rays of sunshine beaming down from the clouds. It never stayed cloudy for long.

Tetons and cloud shadows

I love the way the cloud shadows danced across the mountains.

Teton Wedding

Tetons as backdrop to my daughter’s wedding

Tetons from the south

Evening Tetons on the south side of town, towards the ski resort

and NIGHT:

The evenings were simply gorgeous. Each evening was different from the one before, depending on the clouds and colors. Our first night there, the Milky Way arced across the sky like a white rainbow.

Teton Sunset

Our first sunset

Teton colors at sunset

The photo doesn’t do justice to the incredible colors that night

Tetons in early evening

Early evening

Evening Tetons with wispy clouds

The wispy clouds against the indigo sky were beautiful

Nighttime Tetons

Nice shots of the Tetons with the changing of the light throughout the day! Thanks for including them all. What a beautiful place for a wedding! I am interested in reading about your other thoughts and adventures. I am a professional photographer in Texas, and write a blog on photography and life at http://findingfocustjb.wordpress.com/.

Hard to pic a favorite photo. All would win Best of Show in a Favorite Vacation Contest.
    Look for one and win!

Can’t argue with the beauty in all the pictures and who could ask for a more spectacular backdrop to a wedding! Congratulations on your daughter’s wedding and I’m jealous of your morning, evening and nighttime views. Great photos.

Stunning, stunning, stunning. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to spend a whole summer in that one spot, documenting each day? Better yet, a whole year! I’m glad you posted them all.

Amazing pictures!! I am working at Signal Mountain (next to Jackson Lake for the summer). I agree with your statement on the cloud shadows moving across the mountains, I love watching that phenomenon when it occurs. 🙂 It’s a good thing your visit/the wedding was when it was, it has been sooo smoky here lately you can barely see the mountains… a neat sight really, looks like Chinese watercolor, but overall I prefer the mountains as your pictures captured them. 🙂

Oh, wow, have there been wildfires in the area? I was convinced my daughter’s idea of getting married outdoors on a mountain overlooking the Tetons was crazy, asking her if she knew how many things could go wrong. A huge storm blew in just before the wedding ceremony, but it somehow parted around us and only caused a little drama. I’m so jealous you get to spend an entire summer working there!

      • lilacandivy

Yes, there have been wildfires in the Pocatello, Idaho area and the smoke has been blowing over here… When we went out to look at the meteor shower we were not even sure if we would be able to see the stars, it has been so hazy. Fortunately the night sky was clear. 🙂
Isn’t that funny how the clouds can be so ominous, and you cannot tell if the storm is going to go above you or pass right by? Haha!
Yes I am very, very blessed to be spending my summer here. It’s been simply grand getting to know Wyoming and the Grand Teton Park.

Sounds like a great way to spend a summer to me! I always tell people who’ve never been to Wyoming, Yellowstone, or the Tetons that once they go, they’ll never be the same again. There’s something about it that changes you. Enjoy the rest of your summer at Jackson Lake!

Thank you for sharing these gorgeous images~ I especially love the one of your daughter getting married. How beautiful! I’m glad it worked out, and now just think of the memories you all will have.

    • Mind Margins/Run Nature

It was a lot of work pulling off an outdoor wedding on national forest land, but I’m glad it’s what she wanted. It was beautiful, everyone had a great time, and the memories will last forever.

So funny!! Just as I hit send, I thought, “Oh yeah, and I need to call out for my shift tomorrow.”

I think I will get my 3rd vacation week after next year, so what I need to do is start saving my money now. Then in two years, I can take my 3 weeks and 1 week unpaid, and do it right! But maybe I’d never come back…

      • Mind Margins/Run Nature

You can also have a great trip with only three weeks. That sounds like a great plan! I can’t guarantee you’ll want to go back home (you won’t), but I can promise you won’t be the same person you were before you left. It’s truly that amazing. And of course you have to fit in Yellowstone as well.

Gorgeous photos. And what an amazing place to have a wedding! My grandson and I passed along the Tetons last summer (2011) on our way to Yellowstone and I couldn’t help stopping at nearly every pull-out to snap a photo or two. The mountains just call out: “Remember me. I am eternal but never the same.”

  8. 5kidswdisabilities

Oh, my GOD! It is so beautiful there. The only thing I have to compare it to are the White Mountains in New Hampshire, but they pale by comparison.

  9. iRuniBreathe

YAaaYYYY!! Hurray!! Congrats on your Freshly Pressed!! I’ve been reading this other blog of yours incognito a bit, but obviously I need to get more with it as well. Lovely photos and what a great way to showcase your daughter’s wedding in those mountains.

  10. inukshuk

Ohhhhh, I want to go back so much now !!! Nice pictures, and what a great idea to have a day-by-day comparison.
Congrats ! (on the FP, on the wedding… :))

  11. Jorie

You just got me so excited to go to the Tetons! Which is convenient because…I leave in 10 days! Woo hoo!

Thanks for the vacation pep talk.

    • Mind Margins/Run Nature

I’m so jealous. Can you sneak me in your luggage? You’re going at a great time of year, when most of the kids are heading back to school and there’s a slight hint of autumn in the air. Have a wonderful time!

    • Mind Margins/Run Nature

I’ve been to the Tetons many times, but camping across the valley, and seeing them everyday from the same location, was a great experience. I’d never realized before then how different they could look, changing sometimes from minute to minute. Thanks for visiting.

What a gorgeous backdrop to a wedding! I love those mountains! They are just breathtaking every time I drive by.

    • Mind Margins/Run Nature

I thought my daughter was out of her mind when she told me she wanted to get married on a mountain, but it all worked out just fine. Next time you drive by, jump out of the car and take a hike. They’re even more amazing when you hike up into the canyons and see all the wildflowers.

What an amazing meditation on The Tetons! I love how using the same subject matter as a backdrop, or the actual subject, for such a variety of pictures illuminates how changeable our world is, even as mountains seem unchangeable. Our planet swirls around our sun while we feel as though we are sitting in place. Mountains are monuments to structure and security, and yet they can be so diverse in their representation. Just beautiful.

    • Mind Margins/Run Nature

Thank you, and I’m glad you enjoyed it. As the week wore on, I was amazed at how different the mountains could look, almost minute by minute, depending on the light, cloud cover, rain, stars, etc. I think I could have stayed there forever and never seen the same view twice.

I literally JUST got back last night from my road trip to the Tetons, how wonderful to see it on Freshly Pressed today! I worked there for two summers and those mountains are still stunning EVERY time I look at them. Thanks for sharing your photos!

Your pictures made me homesick for our summer trip (we spent 6 nights camped at Signal Mountain to end our 7 week road trip). Where did you camp? My wife and I have this ongoing argument about our favorite National Park; I think the Tetons might be it.

    • Mind Margins/Run Nature

A 7 week road trip! That’s definitely my favorite kind of vacation! We camped on Shadow Mountain. My overall favorite national park would have to be Yellowstone, but it’s hard to choose. I also love Glacier, Arches, Canyonlands . . . And one of my favorite spots is Natural Bridges National Monument in Utah. If you walk down along the length of the creek bed, under the arches, you can see all kinds of pictographs on the canyon walls.

      • hennacornoelidays

Our top 4 may be Waterton (Glacier’s Canadian twin), Tetons, Mt. Ranier, and Yosemite. Really though, time spent camping is pretty good wherever you are.

What a beautiful wedding! Gorgeous setting. The Tetons were my Grandfather’s favorite mountains. He was an artist and he painted those beautiful peaks…many times. I have one of those pictures that I treasure. Your photos are beautiful!

    • Mind Margins/Run Nature

Michelle, you were one of the very first people to ever find my blog. You’re my oldest blog friend! Thanks so much for always reading and commenting and making me think, and for inspiring me with your own wonderful, thought-provoking blogs. It means the world to me!

      • skippingstones

This is why you deserve to be recognized, because you are so dear! I could say all the same things right back to you. If I ever do get to go see the Tetons, I expect you to meet me there 🙂 I can’t guarantee a hike (cause I’m in no shape to hike, as you probably know), but I will enjoy every minute of our visit.

You’ve logged a great set of moments with tese photos. I love the Tetons and have visited many times. On one bike trip, I told my partner that I could ride this particular road everyday for a year and never see the same scene twice. You’ve given me great joy with your time lapse photos.

    • Mind Margins/Run Nature

I’m so glad you enjoyed them. I love bike riding out there as well. And I agree, the changes in scenery are lovely. I would love to spend an entire year there, being a part of all the changes.

  19. TheBlackTwig

Beautiful photos. It’s amazing that a new view unfolds every moment. And sure it is a wonderful setting for a wedding. Congratulations!

The first photo of the Tetons in the morning took my breath away. The changing colors are so gorgeous and what an amazing backdrop for a wedding! Beautiful photos, indeed! Thank you for sharing them. Congratulations on being Freshly Pressed! 🙂

    • Mind Margins/Run Nature

Thank you very much. The early morning views were probably my favorite. The sun shone directly on the mountains, and there were sometimes low lying clouds that cast beautiful shadows. The evenings were also lovely as well, though.

Its been too long since I’ve been to the Tetons. Woke up in Yellowstone one cold Oct morning to snow. It was about 4AM and I knew the dog was going to get too cold if we continued to stay in the tent so we packed everything up and started driving down to the Tetons. We arrived about 8 minutes before the sun started to rise so we parked the car by the lake and waited. Just as my finger were starting to regain their sensation the sun appeared. It was magical and will be a lifelong memory. Definitely need to get back.

Congratulations on the wedding too! Looked splendid.

    • Mind Margins/Run Nature

That’s a great story, and a wonderful memory of both Yellowstone and the Tetons. I’ve been in Yellowstone in July and had both sleet and snow, which was kind of cool to see with all the geysers. I would love to visit sometime in the winter. We were in Jackson Hole a few Christmases ago and got to cross country ski at the base of the Tetons. It was so quiet and peaceful in the snow–definitely magical. Thanks for commenting!

  22. littlecitybot

wow what an incredible location for a wedding! your daughter looks beautiful!!! congrats! and wow those images…my favourite is the one with your dogs!

    • Mind Margins/Run Nature

Thank you. The dog photo makes me laugh every time I see it. My boyfriend is a dog whisperer and can get them to pose like that everywhere we go. I told him we’re going to have to start another blog of dog poses in scenic locales!

  23. ldsiebs

Beautiful post! Your photos are wonderful. I love the Tetons. We’ve been twice and stayed in Jackson Hole, WY. From there we visited Teton National Park and Yellowstone. We once stayed in a cabin the last time we went that had the most amazing view of the Tetons from the front porch. Where did you camp? Thank you for sharing your trip!

    • Mind Margins/Run Nature

Thank you! We camped on Shadow Mountain, which is National Forest Service land. It’s primitive, and this year no fires were allowed because of the dry conditions, so if you camp there you’ll have to rough it. To us, it was perfect.

      • ldsiebs

That sounds perfect. We love to camp and are enjoying roughing it more and more. It’s the best way to really enjoy getting out there. Thank you, again!

      • Mind Margins/Run Nature

I agree. I used to kick and scream about not having a shower close by, but we bought a solar camp shower and it worked out really well. I love the solitude and quietness of not being in a developed campground. I felt like we practically had the entire mountain to ourselves.
